  • By Bike

Ireland is embracing cycling culture with the development of new greenways, cycle paths and facilities for cyclists. While it is possible to cycle to Kerry, we recommend you check out cycling Ireland to see existing routes and greenways recommended for cyclists. You can bring your bike on public transport, planes, trains and buses, but space is very limited and extra fees may apply. There are several local companies providing bicycle hire in south Kerry.

  • By Boat

Ferries: There are several ferries running from the UK and mainland Europe to Ireland, with ports in Dublin, Wexford and Cork in the south and Belfast in the North.

    Cruise ships and Cargo boats:

Sailing: Kerry has many small and safe harbours and marinas including those at Knightstown, Cahersiveen, and Derrynane for those looking for anchorages and facilities, shops and supplies.

  • By road

Iveragh is easily accessed by car from across Ireland, with many national roads leading to Kerry. However, on the peninsula, many of the roads are narrow and winding and they can be very busy in the summer. Small cars not only produce lower emissions than larger cars, they are also better suited to our smaller roads.

If you choose to travel in a camper van or motorhome, please be considerate on small roads. If you don’t have toilets or waste storage in your van, make sure that you leave no trace. Public toilets and bins are not always available, but that is not an excuse to leave your waste behind. Also, even if you have your own accommodation and cooking facilities, don’t forget to visit some of the welcoming pubs, shops and restaurants on Iveragh to meet the locals, experience local culture, and support small local businesses. There are campsites in Sneem, Caherdaniel and Cahersiveen that offer a full range of services.

  • By Plane

Ireland has 3 international airports, Dublin, Cork and Shannon, but we also have our own regional airport, Kerry Airport, which has direct flights to many locations around Europe.

You can hire a car or access public and private transport from the airport easily to your Iveragh destination. There is a train station and a bus stop within walking distance from the airport.

  • On foot

If you’re looking for truly slow travel options, the Kerry Way walking route links many of the villages on Iveragh and, in turn, links with other long and short walking trails (www.kerryway.com).

  • Private

There are a number of local tour bus and taxi operators on the peninsula, these generally work all year round, but need to be booked in advance. Ask locally for taxi and private tour information.

Remember!

While Google Maps and other map-based location services, can be useful for getting you to your destination, they are not 100% accurate. The routes given by these services may be the shortest, but the roads may not be suitable, particularly for larger vehicles such as SUVs and campers. Location names are not always accurate so be sure to ask for an Eircode to your destination.
