History & Archaeology

Learn about Iveragh’s fascinating History and uncover our Archaeological wonders .

Iveragh’s picturesque landscape has been inhabited by people for thousands of years and many of those people have left behind evidence of their lives. Apart from iconic ringforts, monastic settlements, standing stones and holy wells, the intricate carvings cut into prominent boulders and rocks - known collectively as ‘rock art’ - are a sight to behold in the setting sun. Learn about the emerging use of copper in tools, weaponry, currency and ornaments during Iveragh’s Bronze Age.

Visitors can also experience Iveragh through the lives of notable historical figures: Maude Delap – the pioneer naturalist from Valentia Island, Lady Albinia Brodrick – the daughter of a wealthy English family who joined the push for Irish independence, or Cáit na Pluaise – the Irish woman who was evicted during the famine and forced to take up residence in a cave.
