An tSnaidhm

Sneem

A view of the river from the bridge in Sneem

An tSnaidhm means ‘the knot’ and the village borders the Sneem river where it knots and whirls as it enters the sea.

Sneem is a vibrant, picturesque village. Guarded from the open ocean by a series of small islands and surrounded by hills and mountains, it has the feeling of somewhere well sheltered. Its colourful, eclectic buildings are made all the more picture-perfect by the mountainscapes behind them.

It would be difficult no to be struck by the beauty of the mountainscapes around Sneem.

Sneem is situated between this beautiful coastal environment, large expanses of farmland and the towering Dunkerron mountains which were built over millions of years and further carved and sculpted by the work of glaciers. This landscape that is so steeped in rich geological features, such as mountains, lakes and valleys is also filled with fascinating communities of wildlife. The Lomanagh and Fermoyle Loop Walks are two of the best ways to experience the area’s rich geology and wildlife.

Many trails are accessible from Sneem village.

With walking trails, year-round accommodation, eateries, festivals and events, Sneem is certainly worth a stay. There are a wealth of attractions in the village and the surrounding areas, including community gardens and a sculpture trail with pieces donated from China, Egypt and Israel.
